ASHEVILLE — Why Asheville? Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan answered the question Wednesday that fans across the country have been asking.

“Asheville was recommended as a very positive musical community,” he said during an impromptu interview outside the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. “Good venue, right size, good timing.”

The alternative rock band, which has sold nearly 20 million albums, is in the midst of a nine-show run at The Orange Peel that has drawn thousands of fans to the city.

Corgan said he has written five songs in Asheville, and the Smashing Pumpkins are planning a DVD of their tour that should includes footage of local performances.

Declining to talk about the dynamics of playing with a new lineup, Corgan praised the reception the band has received in Asheville.

“People here have been amazing, really warm, supportive. It’s really been a fantastic experience,” he said about his first trip to Asheville. “This is the kind of community that as a musician you want to play in.”
