INTERVIEW ☭ VERDUN

Line up

» et let’s go.

L’histoire

David : Ouais, t’aimes bien ?

Oui bah du coup j’ai vu le film à cause de vous.

David : Et alors ?

David : E.T.

(rires)

Là on continue à composer.

(rires)

Tonight is the end of the little Tour de France that was the Sévice National tour. Fange plus Verdin is quite a nice line up, how did you organize that?

Géraud: We’ve known Matthias and Fange for a while. We’ve been talking about it for a while and this was the occasion to do it because we hadn’t toured for a year and a half. So we thought it would be cool to do this little week together.

That’s 5 gigs in 5 days and a lot of kilometers. Aren’t you a little dead?

Flo: Oh yes! (laughs) We are totally dead but that’s when we are best. When we are tired with a good hangover, generally that’s when we get the best out of ourselves. I know us.

So, still no Verdun in Verdun gig?

Flo: We were there this morning! (laughs) We stopped at the highway rest area near Verdun. I think that’s the closest we’ve been.

By the way, Sabaton did some promotion and shot some videos in Verdun. Aren’t you a little bit jealous that they got there before you?

Flo: Ah yeah, fuck…

Géraud: I don’t kow… We’d have to ask Jordan.

Flo: Yeah, our sound tech worked with Sabaton.

On November 15 you’ll release your second album “Astral Sabbath”, which was recorded by Cyrille Gachet. How did it go?

Géraud: We rented a place called La Pierre Noire in the Cantal, an old school turned into a concert venue. We spent ten days locked in there working with Cyrille. We were a bit apprehensive because we only ever recoded ourselves, we had never worked with anyone. In the end, despite some clothing problems, everything went well.

Flo: There quickly was some complacency. Everyone was in sweatsuit and slippers. It wasn’t very “doom satanic ritual”. It was sweatsuit/splippers for a week.

In the press release it says that you were “more focused in writing memorable tracks rather than relying on deafening volumes”. Is that the spirit of the new record?

Géraud: Yeah, that’s Matthias’ verve. (laughs) I don’t think it’s so much “memorable”, but rather catchy I’d say. We maybe tried to be a little bit more straightforward. Anyway, we’ve never been an actual doom band…

At the beginning you claimed some psyche influences.

Géraud: Yeah at the beginning, but every record was recorded with different persons and now there isn’t so much psyche.

Flo: Yeah, a little touch of it but no more. We always recorded our albums with two guitarists.

Line up

Yeah, was that the first time you played with only one guitarist?

Flo: Yeah, it changed the way we composed the songs. Before, we used to work with layers of guitars. Now that there’s only one, it forced us to reinvent the way we write songs. To put the melodies in the riffs rather than adding them on top of everything… So this diminishes the psyche aspect we used to have.

« It forced us to reinvent the way we write songs. To put the melodies in the riffs rather than adding them on top of everything… »

David is back on vocals. This doesn’t change anything recording-wise because you were only absent between the two albums. Did your return change anything?

David: Nothing at all! I literally put on the same slippers that I left. I didn’t even ask any question. They wrote to me. They told me “We have to talk.”, and they had everything ready. They told me “In four month we have to be in the studio, are you up for it?” and there we went.

The story

Let’s talk about the story because it’s a bit complicated now. On the first EP, the admiral Masuka survives the nuclear apocalypse, and to understand why he’s the only survivor he goes to space to look for god. The first album is then his introspection as he drifts in space, and we don’t know if he does die in the end.

David: In the end of the first album he throws himself into a black hole, literally. There is some SF, but also some metaphysics. Not in the sense “religions are shit” or anything like that. He undergoes some mutations and in the end throws himself into a black hole hoping to maybe find answers, and if he doesn’t he’ll be propelled through space and the different time-spaces as a form aiming to corrupt every form of life.

« It’s a time loop. The idea is that the end of the third album is the beginning of the first. »

At the beginning of the new album, he wanders through all the multiverses under this quantic form that I call the Demon-Masuka. It’s not a real corporal form, it’s data. And he tries to reincarnate in a body. That’s the whole story of the new album. Without giving any date, we understand that he possesses a man, as a demonic possession, and makes him kill his wife in a ritual to make her give birth to a new child, a new form of humanity that would be his new body.

But technically here, did he go back in time? Because in theory everyone’s dead.

David: It’s a time loop. The idea is that the end of the third album is the beginning of the first. He gives birth to himself. I don’t know if we’ll continue his adventures after that but that was the idea. How do we end something in a satisfactory way? We can play it as if it’s really smart and we thought it from the start.

The video

You released the video for “L’Enfant Nouveau” that was edited by David with images from the movie Beyond The Black Rainbow.

David: Yeah, do you like it?

Yeah well, I watched the movie because of you.

David: And?

I liked it a lot. So, as you superpose this story to yours, the “enfant nouveau” would be Elena, the child from the movie?

David: The thing is, if I used Beyond The Black Rainbow to write “L’Enfant Nouveau”, it was more for the idea of the hunt and the sacrifice. This guy that is corrupted by this quantic form, drifting between madness and reality, and has something that pushes him to kill a being that he loves. It’s the hunting aspect that I loved in the movie. I don’t know if you saw the whole movie?

Yes.

David: There’s a modern Red Riding Hood aspect to it, you know. It’s a movie that affected me a lot.

« There’s a modern Red Riding Hood aspect to it. »

We don’t have a movie about Masuka. If on day we have the money to make it we probably will you know, but Masuka is just pieces of all the movies and albums we listen to tied to each other. On this song I based myself on this movie. But did you really watch the whole movie?

Yeah, I watched all of it.

Flo: Well bravo!

David: Because I have a lot of people telling me “Yeah, the images are cool, what’s it from?” And I tell them “Well this movie! Watch it, it’s cool!”. And even this morning I got a message from the boss of (French webzine) Metalorgie telling me “Dude, I tried to watch it. You made me lose forty minutes of my life.” He didn’t even watch it till the end. It’s a bit contemplative.

It is contemplative, but when you watch it at night half-dead, it fits your state of mind.

David: Exactly.

So it was a one shot, no other video planned for now?

Géraud: We don’t really have a budget for it. We would have liked to shoot some images…

David: We thought about it at some point, but the timing and the budget were a bit tight. A video in a style a bit doom, mystic my ass, or SF, when you don’t have a budget, it can quickly get really kitsch…

Géraud: And doing eight or ten minutes… It’s not like we had three minutes tracks.

David: It was cool to have a visual support to launch the album and I did like I could. As I based myself on it… I already reused images with my other band Necrodancer… But it has to be thought as an homage.

French

“L’Enfant Nouveau” is your first song sung in French and it sounds really good, curiously.

David: Really? Then we’re in French now.

Géraud: We’ll sing everything in French!

Have you thought about doing other songs in French or did this one only happen because of the circumstances?

David: I didn’t impose it. I had never done it before I think. Metal in French is a bit complicated, right? It’s hard not to sound like Lofofora or that kind of thing. They agreed and it went well, now to do it again…

« Metal in French is a bit complicated. »

Flo: We won’t turn all the singing in French of course, but why not.

David: Porque I speak very well in español as well, so we can try that. It also brings some freshness for them and for me. I have to admit that I got a bit scared doing it, but that’s alright, the result is cool enough.

You took a chance and it paid.

David: Yeah well, with the style that we play we don’t revolutionize much but the little risk we take we assume it and we do it in our own time.

Russian

You also have an instrumental track sung in Russian…

David: That’s me as well!

You do all the silent Russian?

David: Yeah, that’s me!

Flo: He does all the instruments with his mouth, in Russian.

The title in Cyrillic, is it because of the storyline or is that the influence of the tour in Russia last year?

David: A bit of both I believe. The first album starts with Chernobyl… We’re closing the loop.

Flo: And on the last album we had samples in Japanese… We didn’t put any samples on this one so we kinf of did it this way.

Ästräl Säbbäth

The album ends with the song “Ästräl Säbbäth”, which is a big surprise. An hymn with very catchy choruses that can be screamed at gigs. Was that the intention?

David: No, not at all.

Géraud: And we don’t even play it live.

David: Not yet but… It’s sung with two voices. It’s Jay and I superposing ourselves. That’s the kind of thing Cyrille brought us to do. This song was almost created in the studio.

Géraud: It’s the last one we composed for the record. We didn’t even demo it…

David: He’s trying to tell you that he doesn’t like it…

Géraud: No, not at all! (laughs)

David: We will play it, I think I really like this one. It’s true that it almost has a chorus.

Jay, is that the first time that you sing?

Jay: I did a bit of backing before, but yeah, it’s the first time.

David: There’s a lot of backing with his voice on the record actually, in support. Because apparently, he sings better than I do.

Jay: On the other tracks I bring some support for the choruses, it’s a bit lighter. As he said, it’s an idea from Cyrille who saw me do the backing and told me: “Try to harmonize the two voices, it can really create something nice”. It wasn’t what we planned at all. As it really sounded good we ended up doing the whole song this way. To play it live we’ll have to adapt it one way or another.

« Cyrille saw me do the backing and told me: Try to harmonize the two voices, it can really create something nice. »

David: It demands a lot of breath and the superposition of the two voices is something we have to work on.

The conclusion

It gives a great conclusion to the album. But it also sounds like the conclusion of Masuka’s story. Is it the grand finale before something new?

David: I think it is. In the end it’s a reboot of himself. We didn’t talk about it, but you know, with SF, if we want we get our crystal balls and resurrect him or something like that but… no, we won’t do that. But it might be interesting to go with something else in the end. Keep the SF aspect and a story, but with different characters… We can also bring him back as a different character in other stories.

« I tried to transcribe what happened to me lately, but through the theme of SF. »

We often have the idea of transcendence in your songs, but here it really is the main theme.

David: It’s the cycle of life, karma. I tried to transcribe what happened to me lately, but through the theme of SF. But a real story, a good story, it doesn’t end well, right?

Right.

David: In the end, E.T. doesn’t go back to his planet. That’s why the movie was a hit.

Are you sure that E.T. doesn’t go back to his planet?

David: In La Soupe aux choux (French classic, watch it) everybody thinks that they go to his planet in the end, but I think that it’s a metaphor for death.

So can we expect an alternative cut of La Soupe aux choux for a future Verdun video?

David: I’m dreaming of a remake.

Really? Who would you pick in the role of Jacques Villeret?

David: Stop it, I already thought about it. We said Malik Bentalha as Jean Carmet, Michaël Youn as La Denrée, and for de Funès… well we have to go with Kad Merad you know, we have to bring in some people!

It would look nice.

David: By the way we are open, if there’s any proposition of financing… I’m available to direct and write it.

And you’re doing the score.

David: Well sure, that would be our dream.

This time the artwork wasn’t done by David as you asked Sinpiggyhead (Nicolas Côme). Can you tell us why you picked him and what you expected of him?

David: A guy with talent. A guy that gives his artwork in time. I think that the cause of my firing on the last album was the artwork. I don’t work well with pressure.  I’ve got a job on the side and I think that I aimed at something way too ambitious for me.

They were right on this. I already didn’t have enough time to complete the writing of the lyrics and they told me “We’ll leave that to someone and you’ll handle the t-shirts and stuff like that.” Nico was 100% a good idea and I put my ego on the side for this, no problem.

« Nico was 100% a good idea. »

Flo: And you were the one who picked him, because you know him.

David: Yes, even for the layout I kind of did the montage. I don’t try to appropriate myself the artwork, the story is already a lot.

What does it represent? We can see pieces of snakes, of rope…

David: It could be the representation of this sacrifice that will bring to the new child, if you like. That’s the way I saw it. The images witness to what this man did to the woman he loves. Really, he kills her, he doesn’t impregnate her or anything. I don’t see why it would bring a child. It’s explained in the next song “The Second Sun”.

I did multiple propositions of montages, always related to the stories. They liked this one and we kept it. It’s true that there aren’t snakes in the story, but we do what we want, don’t we?

Distribution

“Astral Sabbath” will be released in double LP, CD and tape with Throatruiner, Deadlight and Breath Plastic Records. I think that everyone knows Throatruiner but can you tell us about the other two?

Gérault: Deadlight is a label based near Toulouse that has been pretty active these last years and has an interesting roster, pretty open on everything. He’s cool. His thing is CD. We are really happy of the records we released but we wanted to try to work with someone else to try something else and with Alex it happened quite naturally. He’s very interested and he supports us.

Breath Plastic Records released the first Mantar on tape, that’s how I knew him. Same thing, he’s got an eclectic roster: a lot of French and it fits our style. It was really easy and very fast. He’s motivated.

David: We’ll also release the video on VHS.

10 years

You officially formed the band in 2010. Next year it’ll be 10 years…

Géraud: Pfff fuck! (laughs)

Flo: We figured it out on this tour. (laughs)

David: Because we saw a picture of 2010. We went in a temporal rift ourselves, I think. We maybe aged 20 years.

« We saw a picture of 2010. We went in a temporal rift ourselves, I think. We maybe aged 20 years. »

So, nothing planned?

Géraud: No, we’ll try to do a bunch of shows to defend this record.

Jay: We don’t celebrate birthdays. We keep composing. We’ll soon do a split EP.

Géraud: We don’t even celebrate our own birthdays. (laughs)

Flo: We forget our girlfriends’. We suck at remembering dates I think.

David: We were a bit slow releasing records on these first ten years so I think we’ll try to speed it up a bit. We’ll maybe celebrate the 20 years if we’re still there?

What’s next

So you’ll soon have a split with another band?

Géraud: We have a split in preparation, yes.

Jay: Right now we are composing and we’ll try to release it as soon as possible.

Géraud: We’d like to record between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. That’s the plan and then inch allah.

Jay: So it’ll be ready for the band’s 10 year anniversary!

For these new songs, will you keep the same concept or go with something different?

David: A split could be a spinoff, right? We can go with a different story.

Géraud: We don’t really know what will be on it. We’ve been wanting to record covers for a while.

David: For covers you can’t really change the lyrics, can you?

That would be an idea! So apart from that I guess that you will tour a lot?

David: As much as we can!

Géraud: We’d like to, the maximum, yes. For now there isn’t a lot planned except for this little tour. After that we have other gigs in December and two festivals next year. We were waiting for the record’s release, to let people hear it.

David: They shouldn’t hesitate to contact us if they want us to play.

Thanks Verdun!

Them: Thank you!
